SN 2016dsg: A Thermonuclear Explosion Involving a Thick Helium Shell

نویسندگان

چکیده

A thermonuclear explosion triggered by a helium-shell detonation on carbon-oxygen white dwarf core has been predicted to have strong UV line blanketing at early times due the iron-group elements produced during burning. We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of SN 2016dsg, sub-luminous peculiar Type I consistent with involving thick He shell. With redshift 0.04, $i$-band peak absolute magnitude is derived be around -17.5. The object located far away from its host, an early-type galaxy, suggesting it originated old stellar population. spectra collected after are unusually red, show weak O $\lambda$7773 absorption lines, do not evolve significantly over 30 days. An 9700-10500 \AA detected in near-infrared spectrum likely unburnt helium ejecta. evolution models for sub-Chandrasekhar mass shell, while well described existing models.

Sn 2005ap: a Most Brilliant Explosion

We present unfiltered photometric observations with ROTSE-III and optical spectroscopic follow-up with the HET and Keck of the most luminous supernova yet identified, SN 2005ap. The spectra taken about 3 days before and 6 days after maximum light show narrow emission lines (likely originating in the dwarf host) and absorption lines at a redshift of z = 0.2832, which puts the peak unfiltered mag...

RS Ophiuchi : Thermonuclear Explosion or Disc Instability ?

Sokoloski et al (2008) have recently reported evidence that the recurrent nova RS Ophi-uchi produced a pair of highly collimated radio jets within days of its 2006 outburst. This suggests that an accretion disc must be present during the outburst. However in the standard picture of recurrent novae as thermonuclear events, any such disc must be expelled from the white dwarf vicinity, as the nucl...

Optical Spectropolarimetry of Sn 2002ap: a High Velocity Asymmetric Explosion

We present spectropolarimetry of the Type Ic supernova SN 2002ap and give a preliminary analysis: the data were taken at two epochs, close to and one month later than the visual maximum (2002 February 8). In addition we present June 9 spectropolarimetry without analysis. The data show the development of linear polarization. Distinct polarization profiles were seen only in the O I λ7773 multiple...

Detonating Failed Deflagration Model of Thermonuclear Supernovae I. Explosion Dynamics

We present a detonating failed deflagration model of Type Ia supernovae. In this model, the thermonuclear explosion of a massive white dwarf follows an off-center deflagration. We conduct a survey of asymmetric ignition configurations initiated at various distances from the stellar center. In all cases studied, we find that only a small amount of stellar fuel is consumed during deflagration pha...

The Thermonuclear Explosion of Chandrasekhar Mass White Dwarfs

The flame born in the deep interior of a white dwarf that becomes a Type Ia supernova is subject to several instabilities, the combination of which determines the observational characteristics of the explosion. We briefly review these instabilities and discuss the length scales for which each dominates. Their cumulative effect is to accelerate the speed of the flame beyond its laminar value, bu...
